I love everything bagels. Our weekend tradition growing up was to get a dozen bagels from Bethesda Bagels and some cream cheese, lox, capers, and thinly sliced Bermuda onions for a brunch at home with whoever stopped by. It was relaxed and delicious. Now that I live in Ireland I miss a decent East Coast bagel, but I try to make do and thankfully Mr Bell’s here in Cork city sells their own spice blend of Everything Bagel Seasoning. Before that though, I had to make my own blend so I’m sharing my recipe for homemade everything bagel seasoning with you in case you live somewhere where the spice blend isn’t readily available. I have linked to sources for the locally-sourced ingredients within the recipe below.
Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/4 cup black sesame seeds
1/4 cup sea salt (look for flaked, not fine)
3 tablespoons poppy seeds
2 tablespoons dried onion flakes/bits
2 tablespoons dried garlic flakes/bits
Mix all the ingredients together completely and store in an air-tight container in a cool dry place.
I love sprinkling this blend on scrambled eggs or hard-boiled eggs. It is also lovely if you’re baking your own sourdough, bagels, or soft pretzels. I haven’t tried it, but hear people put it on popcorn!
