Knitting Clapotis by Kate Gilbert

One brisk autumn day in 2004, the Clapotis shawl by Kate Gilbert was brought to the world on Knitty and it is now a go-to standard for knitting patterns. Marseille let me write about and try on her Clapotis so I could share it with you here.

The Pattern & Process

Kate Gilbert’s Clapotis design has become a classic. Though Ravelry is no longer the standard for the knitting community, it does have good data on popularity and pattern ratings. Clapotis has a whopping 23,467 projects in 18 years.

Knit on 3.75mm (US5) knitting needles, Marseille found a beautiful gauge. A lovely mix of airy and cosy, as I find the best shawls and wraps to be.

The Yarn

Marseille chose to knit this vibrant Clapotis in Premier Yarns Deborah Norville Serenity Garden Sport‘s Gems colorway. This shift from semi-solid to variegated and speckled is simply charming. These colors are a nice blend of cool and warm as well, making it one to go with nearly any outfit.

The Result

While visiting the States to handle things in the wake of my father’s death, Marseille’s family invited me over for dinner and I got to have a little photoshoot beforehand with Marseille’s hand knits. As you can see, I look rather worn out and tired, but happy. Because to be among love and friends got me through this year.

In regard to your comment ‘. Though Ravelry is no longer the standard for the knitting community,’, I’d love to know what you think has replaced it!

Ravelry not setting the standard any longer doesn’t mean there is a replacement. But it has lost a lot of strength as a community and sales destination since its inaccessible site redesign. Alternative options to pattern sales portals are requested more often than ever before. PayHip, LoveCrafts, and CraftWorld are not the same but excellent alternatives.
