I designed Falling Petals Shawl in 2013 to showcase a semi-solid lace yarn for my first book, Bake Knit Sew (Anchor and Bee, 2014). Of course, that doesn’t limit the pattern, which works equally beautifully in 4ply/sock weight yarn. You’ll see the beautiful samples on display at Stranded By The Sea LYS in Edmonds, Washington as proof. I am sharing more about the design here as well as showing you how it looks knit up in each weight. Shown here in lace (left) and 4ply/sock/fingering (right).
Lacy shawls enthral and intimidated me when I was designing for my first book, so I developed Falling Petals Shawl from my longing to create one that is an ideal first lace knitting project. It reminds me of the end of Spring when the Cherry Blossom trees shed their petals, like nature’s confetti. After each row’s instructions, the stitch count is noted in parenthesis within the pattern.
This pattern works well in lace weight yarn or in 4ply/sock weight yarn.
Lace Weight Materials:
Knit with Dragonfly Fibres Lace yarn 957yd / 875m / 125g (Springtime in Washington colorway) or equivalent weight yarn and yardage using 3.75mm (US 5) circular needles.
4ply/Sock Weight Materials:
Sweet Georgia Cashluxe Fine 840yd / 768m / 242g (Elderberry colorway) or equivalent weight yarn and yardage using 4mm (US 6) circular needles.
Lace Weight Falling Petals Shawl
Knit with merino lace yarn 957yd / 875m / 125g using 3.75mm (US 5) circular needles and a whopping 58 stitch markers. This pattern is forgiving with gauge and the sample was knit in garter stitch at 23sts x 35rows / 4in x 4in, blocked. When blocked, the shawl measures 35in across at the straight edge; 13in from CO to lace edge straight down; 48in around the crescent lace edge.
4ply Weight Falling Petals Shawl
Following the same original pattern, Falling Petals Shawl can be knit up in 4ply/fingering/sock weight yarn. Use US6/4mm to knit and US9/5.5mm needles for the cast off. Two samples knit by Stranded By The Sea LYS in Edmonds, Washington were perfection in Sweet Georgia CashLuxe. Each skein is 420 yards of simmering softness.
Here is Falling Petals Shawl knit in Sweet Georgia Cashluxe Fine, Lupine (blue) and Sweet Georgia CashLuxe Spark, Elderberry (close to mulberry).
