Sewing a Fleece Jacket for a Puppy

When a friend was fostering a puppy, she turned to me for ideas on how to convert baby clothes to a puppy coat to help keep the little one warmer in Ireland’s brisk Autumn weather (who are we kidding, it’s brisk year-round). Instead, I whipped up a little fleece jacket for the pup.

It was fairly straightforward and I had a stuffed animal approximately the same size to work with as a model. Thanks, Snowy (even though I accidentally call him Asta half the time because I think he’s out of The Thin Man and not Tin Tin).

I created a pattern with white paper I had handy. It is just from what I thought would be useful. I’m not used to tiny dogs or puppies as I’ve not been around one in about 10 years. But I think this is a good design overall.

I folded it together and sewed the back piece together. I considered velcro, but the cro hooks can irritate against skin.

Here is a view of the back. Tapered to avoid getting dirty from sitting outside and various dog activities in that region.
