What to Do & Where to Eat on the Island of Ischia

Ischia is a small volcanic island located in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. It is known for its beautiful beaches, thermal hot springs, and picturesque villages. It has a rich history and culture that dates back to ancient times. Accessible by ferry or private boat, this is a less-frequented destination than Capri boasting natural springs and nature walks. I also found it less expensive than Capri.

Ischia is known for its therapeutic thermal springs and has been a popular destination for spa treatments for centuries. In the 20th century, the island became a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The island has a rich cultural heritage, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and traditions. The Ischian cuisine is known for its use of fresh seafood and locally grown ingredients, and is considered to be some of the best in Italy. The island is also known for its traditional festivals and religious celebrations, such as the Festa della Madonna della Neve and the Festa di Sant’Anna, which are an important part of the island’s cultural heritage.

History

The island has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and was later ruled by the Greeks, who named it Pithecusae. During the Roman period, Ischia was a popular holiday destination for wealthy Roman families, who built luxurious villas and thermal baths on the island.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the island was ruled by various groups, including the Byzantines, the Lombards, and the Normans. During the Middle Ages, Ischia was an important center of commerce and trade, and was also used as a military stronghold by various powers, including the Aragonese and the Bourbons.

Where to Sleep

Though I don’t go into accommodations in this post, for the same reasons I didn’t in my post about Capri, I will say we enjoyed our stay at Hotel Torre Sant’Angelo while on the island of Ischia. Excellent hospitality, views, and cuisine from this family-run (Castellaccio) destination. Our room looked out on the water and Sant’Angelo. The photo above is my view at breakfast! Yes, it has been my screensaver on and off the last 14 years.

Ischia is a great destination for a relaxing holiday, and it’s perfect for those who want to enjoy the sun, the sea, and the beautiful scenery.
