Trifecta Shawl

My latest knitwear design is Trifecta Shawl, a classic yet fun triangle shawl that you make your own by following the clues. It was released at the start of January 2022 in conjunction with the #EndAIDSKALWinter22 with Gary Boston. Now I’m sharing the final photos as well as details on how you can purchase your copy of the pattern and help support the important work of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and The Los Angeles LGBT Center.

I previously wrote about the KAL and Trifecta Shawl as it was kicking off, so this post is more about the essential details of the pattern and how the final shawl can look. Every result is unique to the knitter, so how mine looks will not be how yours looks unless you plan it that way. These colors were dyed by Eve Chambers Textiles in West Cork.

The Mystery KAL

It was part of an international mystery KAL that included both designer-provided clues and also choose-your-own-adventure clues. Three dyers in three countries created beautiful kits to make the design shine. Each Friday, a new clue was released and now the complete pattern is available for purchase with half of the price going to AIDS/LifeCycle.

Trifecta Shawl Pattern

The three-colour Trifecta Shawl design is inspired by my love of colour and textures beside one another. This top-down triangle shawl uses three colorways of DK yarn (100g, about 210m/229y each) to create a fun striping design, both in color and texture. It is approachable for an enthusiastic beginner or an experienced knitter.

Let’s Talk Yarn

Three dyers created kits for this shawl design, but you can create your own at your LYS or in your yarn larder. This pattern works with one skein (100g, 190–210 meters / 208–229 yards) in each of these three types of colorways:

  • Color 1: 100g semi-solid DK in a colorway that makes you happy
  • Color 2: 100g variegated/speckled DK
  • Color 3: 100g semi-solid DK in a neutral colorway

If you want to check out the kits created or shop from the generous and talented hand dyers who were part of the Trifecta KAL, here are the links to the three shops:

AIDS/LifeCycle

For every MKAL (Trifecta Shawl) pattern purchased, HALF the price of the pattern will go to AIDS/LifeCycle®. The pattern is priced at $8, so that’s $4 per pattern being donated. Any fees will come out of my half. This donation amount stands from launch until the end of 2022. So, even if you don’t participate in the MKAL with us, you can buy the pattern any time in 2022 for the money to still go to AIDS/LifeCycle®.

AIDS/LifeCycle is a seven-day, 545-mile charity bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles benefitting San Francisco AIDS Foundation and The Los Angeles LGBT Center. You can read more about the use of funds here. If you’re not a crafter, you can still donate directly to AIDS/LifeCycle® via Gary’s participant bio.

Several Wonderful KALs

If you love the idea of participating in a KAL to benefit AIDS/LifeCycle, Gary is continuing this with a series of them throughout 2022. If you prefer the hook to needles, be sure to check out his Alicia Shawl pattern by David Browning of Bearded Yarn Dudes and YouTube fame. This CAL ran concurrently with the Trifecta Shawl KAL. The pattern requires 2 or 3 100g skeins DK weight all one color or in a gradient/self stripe. The Alicia Shawl pattern is priced at US $4.99 on Ravelry.
