10 Hidden Gems When Visiting Washington, DC

I’ve visited Washington, DC three times in the last year which reminded me how much I love it, so thought it might be helpful post to share links to old DC-related posts, while also suggest a few fun things and useful links for your own adventures in America’s capital city. It’s often called ‘America’s hometown’ because it belongs to us all, but it is my actual hometown as well. In this post, I want to share some places to go that aren’t necessarily the most touristy.

Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC.

Washington, D.C. is a vibrant city with many hidden gems to explore and here are 10 of my faves:

  1. Visit the National Arboretum: This peaceful, 446-acre park is a hidden gem in the city, featuring beautiful gardens, a bonsai museum, and a historic columbarium.
  2. Explore the U Street Corridor: This historic neighborhood is known for its vibrant music scene and cultural heritage, with a diverse array of restaurants, bars, and shops. Ben’s Chill Bowl is a must while here.
  3. Take a walking tour of Georgetown: This charming neighborhood is filled with historic homes, lovely gardens, and picturesque cobblestone streets.
  4. Visit the National Museum of Women in the Arts: This museum is dedicated to celebrating the contributions of women artists and is home to a stunning collection of art from around the world.
  5. Attend a concert at the 9:30 Club: This legendary music venue has hosted some of the biggest names in music and is a must-visit for music lovers. I saw so many great bands here in my 20s, from They Might Be Giants to Death Cab for Cutie.
  6. Enjoy a picnic in Meridian Hill Park: This stunning park features beautiful fountains, lush gardens, and stunning views of the city.
  7. Explore the Dupont Circle Farmers Market: This popular farmers market features a variety of local produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts.
  8. Visit the Heurich House Museum: This historic mansion was once home to one of Washington’s most successful brewers and is now a museum dedicated to the history of beer in the city. I remember when this property was for sale and I dreamed of buying it.
  9. Walk or bike the C&O Canal Towpath: This 185-mile trail follows the Potomac River and offers breathtaking views of the city and surrounding countryside. On weekends in good weather, you’ll often see artists painting along the way.
  10. Upper and Lower Senate Garden: Best kept secrets on the Hill. I’ve gone here to picnic with friends and it’s an oasis of landscape architecture amidst otherwise bustling Capitol Hill.

These are just a few of the many non-touristy things to do in Washington, D.C. Explore the city’s lesser-known neighborhoods and hidden gems to discover the real heart of this vibrant and culturally rich city.
