8 Family-friendly Things to Do in Kilkenny

Kilkenny, Ireland is a charming medieval city that offers a wealth of activities for families with children of all ages. From fascinating historical sites to fun-filled outdoor adventures, Kilkenny has something for everyone. Of course, where to stay with kids is always a concern. Kid-friendly hotels are such a valued element of a family trip. The top two are: New Park (and their renowned kids club) and Springhill Court.

Things to Do & See

  1. Visit Kilkenny Castle: Kilkenny Castle is a must-see attraction in the city, and it’s a great place for families to explore. The castle dates back to the 12th century and has been beautifully restored, offering visitors a glimpse into the lives of the aristocrats who once lived there. Kids will love exploring the castle’s many rooms and learning about its fascinating history.
  2. Take a walk through the Medieval Mile: The Medieval Mile is a pedestrianized route through Kilkenny’s historic city center, and it’s a great way for families to explore the city’s many sights and attractions. Along the way, you’ll see the Black Abbey, the Shee Alms House, and many other interesting buildings.
  3. Visit Zwarbles Ireland farm: Suzanna Crampton, an environmental farmer, photographer, and writer, runs Zwarbles Ireland, her family’s farm which has operated for seven generations. Private tours and visits are available by appointment only. You can also order items from her online store as authentic Irish souvenirs (including These Islands). For additional information, Outdoor Kilkenny has a nice profile. This is not a petting zoo, so set expectations for everyone if you schedule a visit with Suzanna. I highly recommend visiting Zwartbles for the scenery and environmental farming perspectives. There’s a photo below from my visit in 2013. Wear wellies or boots.
  4. Visit the National Reptile Zoo: The National Reptile Zoo is a fantastic attraction for families with kids who love animals. The zoo is home to a wide variety of reptiles, including snakes, lizards, and crocodiles, and kids can get up close and personal with them in a safe and controlled environment.
  5. Go on a bike ride along the River Nore: Kilkenny is located on the banks of the River Nore, and there are many scenic bike trails that run alongside it. Rent some bikes and take a leisurely ride along the river, enjoying the beautiful views and fresh air.
  6. Explore Kilkenny’s many parks and gardens: Kilkenny is known for its beautiful parks and gardens, and they’re a great place for families to spend a relaxing afternoon. Check out the Castle Park, the Kilkenny City Park, and the Rothe House Garden, all of which offer plenty of space for kids to run around and play.
  7. Attend a traditional Irish music session: Kilkenny is home to many cozy pubs and live music venues, where families can enjoy traditional Irish music and dancing. It’s a great way to experience the local culture and have some fun with the whole family.
  8. Castlecomer Discovery Park: This unique destination is on the grounds of woodland owned by Coillte and managed by Castlecomer Discovery Park. There are 80 acres of woodland range of activities around the estate including climbing walls, boating, adventure playgrounds, orienteering, Ireland’s longest zip wire, tree top walks, and even a high ropes challenge. The Irish Mining Museum is there too with a purpose-built cafe, craft village, and spaces for educational activities.
