During EYF 2018, Marseille bought Rauma 2-ply Lamellgarn from Ysolda‘s shop to knit herself a Hansel Shawl by Gudrun Johnston. And after Marseille knit it, blocked it, and wove in the ends, she let me try it out & write about it. It is absolutely so cosy and warm!
The Pattern & Process
Gudrun Johnston designed a versatile piece with her Hansel Shawl. The full-sized version is useful as a cosy shawl or a baby blanket. It is a traditional Shetland Hap shawl.
Marseille used Rauma 2-ply Lamellgarn which is a light fingering yarn and knit it on US 8 – 5.0 mm needles.
Needless to say, this project is one that isn’t done until the whole thing is blocked and the ends are woven in. Check it out before blocking below where I describe the yarn.
That in itself was an undertaking! She blocked it on a frame which is whole next level and impressive.
It was a big undertaking and took her one year to knit alongside other projects and life. Overall, she found the pattern to be clearly written and effective as well as traditional.
The Yarn
Again, Marseille bought four colorways of 100% Wool Rauma 2-ply Lamellgarn in March 2018. She was drawn to the rustic and sheepy nature of the wool. The variety of great colors helped too! She chose 13L grey as the main color and for the accent colors she went with one skein each of 74 M Rk Petrol, 58 Grass Green, and 68 Blue.
Each skein is 273 yards / 50 grams. If you’re looking to knit this similarly, but need a yarn substitute here’s a link to YarnSub.
This yarn responds well to blocking. As you can see by this before photo and just below it the after blocking photo.
Behold, the magic of blocking! I never get over that. Both size and stitch definition just really shine with proper blocking and weaving in the ends.
The Result
The result is very warm and has an amazing texture! It is lovely as a shawl and I imagine it would be a phenomenally lovely baby blanket.
