Using a Patch to Mend a Fine-knit Top While Adding Personality

In 2006, I bought a lovely classic cream fine knit top to wear as a separate for work. It went with everything and was so soft. When I moved to Ireland from the Silicon Valley, it came with me.

Fast forward to when I went got it out to wear this Spring and it had a tiny hole near the left shoulder.

I wasn’t sure if I could patch it with matching thread, so I considered embracing it and looked for a fun patch.

Thankfully, I had a hummingbird patch in my craft cupboard.

In adding this iron-on patch, I could get the glue to melt enough it would hold in place for sewing.

Then I carefully stitched around the edge of the bird outline, trying to avoid the white edge itself.

Being completely secured on all sides, the tiny hole is sealed in and if it spreads it won’t unravel beyond the back of the bird patch. It took about 30 minutes total and I love the result. It is fun to wear and now I don’t worry when I wash it.
