Homemade Coffee Coconut Sugar Scrub

There is nothing quite like the allure of a spa day. Peace, tranquility, nicely scented things on our skin, and pampering ourselves to feel rejuvenated and relaxed. As a mom of two, all those things are rare on a daily basis, but so is the spare time to escape for a spa day. For this reason, I try to have my own mini spa vacations at home.

I started this self-care habit right after university when I would give myself a pedicure every week. It was a simple, affordable luxury. One that I could sustain without worrying about schedule or budget. If I had an hour, I could feel pampered. After a while (and children), I let go of my spare time for other pursuits, but when I had a mani-pedi outing for Sara’s wedding, I remembered why I love it so much. My skin loves it! So, I restarted this habit, even if it was sporadic.

To make sure I find the time, I have accountability in a surprising way. I include my five-year-old son, letting him choose my toenail polish color. Needless to say, he has favoured “Avenger Hulk Smash Green” a lot lately, but I think “Pokemon Gengar Violet” may be a contender next week. He asks me until my toenails are a fresh color, so it reminds me to take that time for myself.

Of course, soft happy feet and skin make pedicures feel all the more complete, so I started making my own coffee coconut sugar scrub. It was actually my brother-in-law’s idea a couple Christmases ago and it struck me as pretty brilliant.

I played around until I got the right consistency. That is my favorite part because it can be scrubbier with more sugar and coffee, or softer with more coconut oil. It is up to you. So, here is the basic “recipe” for the coffee coconut sugar scrub:

Homemade Coffee Coconut Sugar Scrub

1/3 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup raw sugar
1/4 cup coffee grounds (you can dry out used grounds to use)

Stir the ingredients together.
Store in an air-tight jar in a dry area of the shower or bath.

I mix them in small batches so it stays fresh. You can also add essential oils if you want a particular effect or scent.
