The comfort of a crisp pie crust and warm gooey filling has a comforting combination. I have previously shared my Snyder Family Pie Crust Recipe, but this post is about how to make a simple pie crust that works for most pies, including savoury.
Simple Pie Crust
To make a pie crust, you will need the following ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
To make the pie crust, start by whisking together the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter or your hands to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Gradually, add the ice water to the flour mixture, stirring with a fork, until the dough comes together in a ball.
Once the dough has come together, transfer it to a lightly floured surface and knead it gently a few times until it is smooth. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a disk. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
When you are ready to use the pie crust, remove it from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften slightly. Roll the pie crust out on a lightly floured surface until it is large enough to fit into your pie dish. Transfer the pie crust to the pie dish and use a fork to prick the bottom of the crust all over.
Bake the pie crust according to the recipe you are using, or until it is golden brown. Let the pie crust cool before filling it with your desired filling.
