Button Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial

One of the easiest Christmas crafts I know is also a fun one to do with kids or friends – button Christmas tree ornaments! It’s so easy, Tiger sells a kit. I have made them a few times, so these photos are of various ornaments I’ve created, which gives you a good idea of how it works with various kinds of buttons. But I’ll show you how to make it with the Tiger kit because the variety of colors helps differentiate button sizes nicely. Here is a photo of the kit I bought to make this.

The kit is handy, but you can easily make it yourself with spare buttons or inexpensive ones from the store. The key is that you want about 12 or 13 buttons in graduated sizes, plus two small ones for the “tree trunk”. If possible, a gold bead or star bead for the top. Buttons can be two in the same size a couple times. You can choose a color theme or go with metallic or monochromatic.

Making the Ornament

With all your buttons handy, organize them by size in your work area. Starting with the first of the two “tree trunk” buttons, string the embroidery thread through two adjacent buttonholes, like shown below

Then ready the remaining buttons to thread onto the same two strands of embroidery thread, starting with the second “tree trunk” button then going from largest to smallest button to create the appearance of a tree shape.

If you have a star bead or gold button, the top is a fun spot to put it. Once all the buttons are threaded on, knot the two strings together at the top TWICE then knot twice again after another two or three inches, which will be used to hang it on the Christmas tree.

This makes a fun, last-minute gift or adornment atop Christmas wrapping.
