For World Wide Knit in Public Day in Cork city, we held a special The Big Knit-focused KAL morning and it was such fun. Our group knit and crocheted many little smoothie bottle hats for The Innocent Big Knit campaign in aid of Age Action. Each hat knit results in €0.30 going towards Age Action. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but it adds up. There’s still time for you to knit one too. First, I’ll tell you how to get involved in Innocent’s The Big Knit, then I’ll tell you all about our WWKIPD Big Knit morning.
About The Big Knit for Age Action
From the Innocent The Big Knit website:
The colder months can be tough for a lot of people – as many as 25,000 older people’s lives are at risk because of the cold. And we wanted to help.
Back in 2008 we had an idea. We asked some older people, and some younger people, to knit little woolly hats. We put those hats on our smoothies, and for each one sold we made a donation of 30c to Age Action.
The idea snowballed and so far the people of Ireland have knitted an astonishing 490,000 hats. Together we’ve raised over €150,000, and raised awareness of the great work done by charities like Age Action.
There is no doubting the success of this campaign. Here is a study done in the UK. Photo below: Leon Farrell/Photocall Ireland
Be Involved in The Big Knit
You can knit or crochet your own little hat for an Innocent smoothie bottle and send it in to them to be part of this campaign. Innocent has their address on this web page as well as contact information to reach out with questions. They’re accepting hat donations until July 31, 2019. They’re perfect projects for scrap yarn.
There are numerous patterns online to follow or use as a jumping off point. These hats are tiny, so they’re relatively quick knits.

There is no perfect hat. Each one helps reach their fundraising goals. I knit these simple ones, but scroll down to see the collection of hats knit by our WWKIPD Big Knit group!
Our WWKIPD Big Knit Morning
The event was hosted by Electric on South Mall from 10am to 12 Noon. They reserved us a cosy corner nook with perfect natural light.
We had a good turnout of about one dozen crafters, not counting the many passerby and tourists who popped in to snap a photo of us.
Here are the hats knit and crocheted by our group. Even friends from our usual knit group who couldn’t attend sent hats!
A good time was had by all. Here are a few photos of us.
Frankie and me.
Sara and me.
It was really a relaxed morning with some lovely hats to show for it.
