Making a Travel LEGO Set

Traveling this summer has inspired quite a few posts for EvinOK, but this was one of my favourites because I love LEGO.

Planning

I loved the tutorials on Pinterest for metal Altoid tins or lunchbox LEGO sets, but it just wasn’t working for me. Our only metal boxes are for other purposes and I really don’t like using glue guns. Give me a hedge trimmer, electric roast carver, or staple gun, but keep your glue gun. I have yet to be successful with one. So, I decided to play it by ear and find a container first and then use LEGO tape in a way that would work for it.

Materials

    • Lego Tape (possibly double-sided tape too if its weak tape)
    • Container
    • Legos (I’ll admit, we had odds and ends of fake Lego which I am using for this because I won’t worry its from a precious Ninjago set)

Approach

I found a container at TKMaxx for €3 on clearance and it is perfect for this purpose. Added bonus is that if we outgrow this use, the Lego tape can come off and this container can be used for a multitude of other purposes. Reduce, reuse, recycle – they’re in order of what to try to do first, right?

I used the barcode from the bottom of the container to mark the centre of the base on the lid itself. That way I wouldn’t place Lego tape where the centre divider would bump into it.

Ok, so I cut Lego tape to fit the opening perfectly then to make sure it lined up well, I used an actual Lego piece. Naturally, before placing the piece down, I checked the placement.

I’ll admit, removing the paper backing was the hardest part. I unfortunately keep my nails rather tidy and trim, so it was a challenge.

The placement was perfect, you can see when I turn it upside down.

Another way to put them on and make sure the strips line up is to place them upside down on an upside down flat Lego piece then adhere it in that formation.

Result

The boys love the result. Fast favourite!
