Knitting Shui Kuen Kozinski’s Moonlight Sonata Shawl

The comfort of a hand knit shawl hugging your neck and shoulders is so comforting, much like a million little woolly hugs. And to also have a pattern that feels vibrant, elegant, or so very ‘you’ is like hitting the lottery. That’s just what Marseille did when she knit Shui Kuen Kozinski’s Moonlight Sonata Shawl. Here’s the low down on how she knit this beautiful yet classic shawl in case you want to make one too (spoiler alert: I do!).

This was knit with two skeins of Stardust by Dream in Color. The warm blue color way is called Sapphire. She bought the yarn in September 2009 and worked on the shawl on and off for the following 11 months. Marseille finished knitting this on August 27, 2010, leaving just a small ball of yarn unused.

A week or so later, she blocked the shawl in time to enter it in the 2010 Anne Arundel County Fair, at which the shawl won a white ribbon (3rd place).

Though this is a striking pattern with lovely detailing and texture, it has only been listed as a Ravelry project 245 times, but knitters are onto something since the pattern is in 1,328 queues!

Let’s feast on a few close-ups of the stitchwork and texture.

What do you think? What color would you knit yours to be?

What a gorgeous design–and color! I’ve seen some versions posted on Ravelry in white and pale colors, but I can imagine knitting this in a dark color or maybe a dark variegated color. Thanks for spotlighting this; it’s not in my queue yet, but it deserves to be!

Isn’t it stunning? The blue is perfect for it, though you’re right about the challenge of darker yarn colorways. Pink would be darling! Like candy or marshmallows.
